Abu Bakr

Bismillah,

With hesitance I post a reminder about Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq (may Allah be pleased with him). I am hesitant because my post does a great injustice to who he was (may Allah be pleased with him). Insha’Allah you will forgive me for my brevity and lack of knowledge.

Abu Bakr was born with the name ‘Abdullah and is known by many names and titles. The most well-known of which is As-Siddeeq because of his intense truthfulness with regard to belief in the Prophet (upon whom be blessings and peace). In the days of ignorance Abu Bakr was a person of high status and a well-known scholar of genealogy. He was a wealthy businessman, well travelled and a person who gave much in charity.

Here are two stories about Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that are amazing and inspiring – stories that we can and should recall often.

From Sahih Muslim: Once the Prophet (upon whom be blessings and peace) asked: “Who began this day fasting?” Abu Bakr said: “I did.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Who participated in a funeral procession today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did” Prophet (upon whom be blessings and peace) said: “Who fed a needy person today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did” He (peace be upon him) said: “Who visited a sick person today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did” Then, the Prophet (upon whom be blessings and peace) said: “These things cannot all meet in a single person but that they will enter Paradise.”

And from Abu Dawood, narrated by Umar ibn Khattab “the Prophet (upon whom be blessings and peace) ordered us to give charity. It happened to coincide with some wealth I had just acquired and I said to myself: If I will ever surpass Abu Bakr, this is the day I will surpass him. And so I came to the Prophet (upon whom be blessings and peace) with half of my wealth and he (peace be upon him) said to me: "What have you left for your family?" I said: The same amount. Then, Abu Bakr came with all of his wealth. The Prophet (upon whom be blessings and peace) said to him: "What have you left for your family?" He said: “I have left them Allah and His Messenger.” I said: I will never surpass you in anything.”

His daughter Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “When he died, he did not leave neither gold nor silver coin.”

Sheikhul-Islaam said: “The household of Aboo Bakr is that of Eemaan. There was no hypocrite among them.”

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No body has done a favour for us except that we have compensated him save Aboo Bakr for, he has done us favours that, it is only Allah who can recompense him for it on the Day of Judgement.” (Tirmidhi).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: “O Abu Bakr! You are the first person to enter Paradise from my nation.” (Abu Dawud).

Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “We, during the time of the Prophet saws did not consider anybody equal with Abu Bakr.” (al-Bukhari)

Dear Anonymous,

Here is a short summary from Mishkash:

When the Quraysh confronted the Prophet after the Night Journey, they turned to Abu Bakr and said: "Do you believe what he said, that he went last night to the Bayt al Maqdis and came back before morning?" He replied: "If he said it, then I believe him, yes, and I do believe him regarding what is farther than that. I believe the news of heaven he brings, whether in the space of a morning or in that of an evening journey."

Because of this Abu Bakr was named al-Siddîq: the Very Truthful, the One Who Never Lies.

Abu Bakr’s high rank is indicated, among other signs. Such as the mention of his companionship in the verse: "The second of two when the two were in the cave, and he said unto his companion: Grieve not" (9:40) which refers, by Consensus, to the Prophet and Abu Bakr.

Alhumduillah,
Abu Bakr is a great man! Omar once asked the prophet whom he loved the most in this world and he said Aisha, he then asked him who was next and he said Abu Bakr (then was Omar).
Abu Bakr was once called by his father the 'freer of slaves' because he would spent his wealth freeing Muslim slave, including Bilal. Alhumduillah Abu Bakr is a great example for all Muslim. Insha Allah I will read his biography soon.
Asalamu Alakum.
